The Tragic ‘Miss Universe 2015’

This year will always be remembered in the history of beauty pageants and NOT for a good reason.

Last night, the international event was held at the AXIS Theater, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and ended in the most embarrassing way possible. Out of 80 contestants from around the world, two of the most beautiful girls were waiting to see which of them will have the privilege of earning the bedazzling crown of Miss Universe. The moment of tension lasted a few seconds but the result was horrendous.

Host Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the WINNER and last year’s Miss Universe Paulina Vega, who is also from Colombia, jumped in delight and hugged the new successor. Paulina gave Ariadna the crown, the bouquet and the sash.

But a few moments later, when the new Miss Universe was enjoying her moment of reign, hoisting the flag of her country and throwing the kisses at her well-wishers, the host came back and dreadfully announced – “I have to apologize.”. Everyone including the winner stood surprised and the surprise turned into shock when Steve proceeded to correct his mistake by saying “The first RUNNER UP is Colombia”. Everyone in the gallery shouted out loud immediately – some with anger, some with laughter. But no one was more disheartened than the temporary Miss Universe crown-holder Ariadna.

The host further corrected his mistake by uttering the name of the CORRECT Miss Universe who happened to be Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach. Pia was also stupefied by this completely unexpected event and could not believe what was happening. She still walked towards Ariadna and tried to be as humane as possible about the whole thing. Pauline then came back on stage, took away Ariadna’s crown and gave it to the real Miss Universe.

The night ended in tears, smiles, rage and awkwardness. The host Steve Harvey then officially apologized through his facebook page by saying –

Hey Everyone,

I made a terrible mistake tonight in announcing the wrong winner and runner-up for the Miss Universe pageant. I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. I hope that you can forgive me.

All contestants were amazing but I want to specifically apologize to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines again and wholeheartedly. You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves.

Well Steve, for your own sake, we all hope you will stay away from these horrible mistakes in future.
